Autumnal Equinox Flow - Vinyasa Master-Class

Warming from the Inside-Out

Friday 20th Sept - 6.30 - 8.30 pm

A practice full of familiarity, with grounding postures that will nourish, harmonise, and calm the nervous system.

This is a time to observe balance in the natural world, due to the balance of dark and light, night and day. Within the parameters of Chronos time, we are now moving toward the first day of the Autumn Equinox which falls this year on Sunday, 22nd September. On this day, the sun rises exactly in the east and sets exactly in the west, where day and night are the same length.

As the weather starts to becomes cooler, this is a timeley reminder to create a strong immune system, which means eating nourishing warming earthy foods, root vegetables, stews and spices to help fuel every cell of the body, also grounding ourselves and moving the body in a slow, rhythmic, fluid way to keep lymph and blood flowing freely as well as boosting energy reserves.

For this practice you can expect a 15 minute seated meditation where we will set a meaningful intention to affirm and honour the changing of the season. Then we will begin to move rhythmically with some gentle warm up stretches, followed by several carefully planned vinyasa krama sequences which will be completely within your comfort zone. These will include a slow flow combination of grounding standing poses, simple balances, twists and forward folds, then on to the floor for some deep stretching aimed to create spaciousness for the side body, lower back, shoulders and internal organs. We will culminate the practice with 10 minutes of supine postures designed to calm the nervous system followed by a 10 minute deep relaxation.

A properly executed vinyasa krama practice mimics the way nature works-always moving, evolving and changing. Events in nature do not just happen, they unfold, they develop. Thus in our vinyasa practice, we let each asana unfold into the next, the way a seed unfolds into a stem, then into a bud, then into a flower, then back into the earth to nourish the next generation. When asanas, the sequence of changes, are intelligently woven together with breath and conscious intention, we align ourselves with the continuous flow, the undulating rhythm, of the universe. Then our postures and transitions become an expression of effortless grace, joy and pure presence for body, mind and spirit.
